ASK Bruce

QUESTION:

Hello Bruce,
I have a question regarding my career choice.  I am currently entering my
3rd year in public accounting with a Big 5 accounting firm.  Although, I
believe that public accounting was a great way to start my career, I do not
believe that is where I want to finish my career.  I have contemplated
whether I would like to become a corporate controller, accounting manager,
etc, however I believe that I would enjoy the opportunity of starting my own
business.  The business I am interested in involves contracting myself out
to various companies to temporarily work in their accounting departments as
a controller, financial analysts, etc.  Is this a feasible career track?  If
so, do you have any advice on how I could get started in something like
this.  I appreciate you taking the time to read my question and I look
forward to hearing back from you.

Thank you for your time, Sam

ANSWER:

Dear Want-be consultant-

As a three year, big 5, public accounting guy, you are indeed a valuable
commodity.  Depending on your specialization and type of clients, an
accounting manager or controller position would be a great next step for
you.  However I do not recommend the consulting route at this time.As a
career builder, a mid to large size company would give you more of the
hands-on experience that will make you an even more marketable candidate
down the line.  Companies want to see a proven track record within a
specific company.  What added value and experience do you bring to the
table?
