North American Iron Ore Finance
Cliffs Natural Resources  

Cliffs Natural Resources is an international mining and natural resources company. We are the largest producer of iron ore pellets in North America, a major supplier of direct-shipping lump and fines iron ore out of Australia and a significant producer of metallurgical coal. The North American business unit is comprised of six iron ore mines owned or managed in Michigan, Minnesota and Eastern Canada, and two coking coal mining complexes located in West Virginia and Alabama. The Asia Pacific business unit is comprised of two iron ore mining complexes in Western Australia and a 45% economic interest in a coking and thermal coal mine in Queensland, Australia. The South American business unit includes a 30% interest in the Amapá Project, an iron ore project in the state of Amapá in Brazil, as well as a number of smaller greenfield projects not yet in production.  

Over recent years, Cliffs has been executing a strategy designed to achieve scale in the mining industry and focused on serving the world’s largest and fastest growing steel markets. 

Summary of Principal Functions:

Gather financial and statistical information from the Company's North American mines necessary to accomplish the following functions for the North American business unit:  prepare the business unit's annual capital and operating budgets, prepare periodic updates to those budgets throughout the year, perform ad hoc analyses of the Company's North American mines and other potential business ventures, advise Business Unit management of the results of the budgets and analyses to facilitate their decision-making process, compile financial and operational data necessary for the Company's regulatory filings. 

Specific Responsibilities:

·         Review operational, capital, and cash forecasts prepared by the Company's North American mines and prepare budgets, current estimates, and long-range plans for the Business Unit.

·         Review capital project justifications completed by the North American mines, assess their financial merits, and recommend to the Business Unit's management team whether or not they should be approved.

·         Perform ad-hoc analyses, as requested, of the Company's North American operations and other ventures the Business Unit is evaluating.

·         Prepare comparison reports of actual performance to budget, and complete month-end analysis reports for Company management's reference and to support the Company's quarterly and annual regulatory filings.

·         Monitor the Business Unit's performance to identify errors, internal control weaknesses or undesirable cost or operational trends, recommend improvements, and ensure solutions are implemented and maintained.

·         Interact with the Company's various auditors to facilitate the successful completion of necessary audits.

·         Provide financial analysis support for vendor negotiations as well as analyzing new contracts to ensure proper legal commitments and compliance with established policies and procedures.

·         Develop Business Unit policies and procedures to ensure Company assets are safeguarded, necessary financial functions are completed in an efficient and effective manner, and applicable laws and regulations are complied with.

·         Leverage various software applications and other tools to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of assigned duties.

·         Travel to the Company's North American mines to perform duties as necessary.

·         Participate in temporary assignments throughout the Business Unit's operations or Company. 

Education Needed:

Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration.

Master’s degree in Business Administration, Certified Public Accountant, and/or Certified Management Accountant preferred. 

Experience Needed:

5 years of experience in accounting or financial analysis, preferably in a manufacturing setting.
