Barrick is headquartered in
Toronto, Canada and has 27 mining operations with many advanced exploration
projects located across 5 continents and a large number of tenements located on
some of the most prolific and prospective mineral trends. 12 of Barricks mines
and mining projects are located in North America, with the Pueblo Viejo project
falling under this jurisdiction.
Pueblo Viejo is one of
Barrick's highest profile projects that is currently under construction with an
estimated cost of $2.7 billion. Located in the Dominican Republic, this mine is
projected to be one of Barrick's greatest gold producers utilizing state of the
art mining and processing technology. Located approximately 90 minutes from
Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic's capital, it will contribute greatly to
the local economy for years to come.
The Pueblo Viejo project is a
joint venture between Barrick Gold Corporation (60%) and GoldCorp (40%) and will
be operated by Barrick through the Pueblo Viejo Dominicana Corporation.
Position Overview
The Project Controller will be responsible for setting a clear strategic
direction for the Pueblo Viejo Project including establishing systems, controls
and processes required to effectively capture, manage, report, and control
financial information for construction and/or operating activities. During the
construction phase a tight productive relationship with the project controls
group will be necessary to effectively manage costs since the two group
complement each other. The controller is also expected to generate ideas to
maximize the use of company resources. The position supports the mine and is
based in Santo Domingo. It includes travel of up to 20% to locations such as
Toronto and Vancouver.
Main Duties and
Responsibilities
Recruit, develop,
lead and train finance and accounting staff for the Project.
Develop and manage
routine transaction processing to ensure business requirements are met
(accounts payable, expenses, revenues, inventory, local taxes, etc).
Oversee the
accuracy and adequacy of accounting records maintained for the Project.
Responsible to
manage the preparation of financial statements.
Manage timely,
accurate and adequate financial and tax reporting.
Act as a key point
of contact for their Pueblo Viejo's annual audit and intra-year audits.
Develop and
oversee funding and treasury processing and requirements on behalf of the
project.
Represent the
finance team related to development, implementation and changes to Oracle
accounting system.
Coordinate
activities with functional leads and ensure that systems and procedures are in
place or necessary changes are made to compile information from the EPCM
contractors and owner locations in a timely, accurate and adequate basis for
project management purposes.
Coordinate and
liaise with Project Controls in the establishment and preparation of standard
reporting requirements on a timely basis ensuring that all accounting aspects
such as capitalization, start up costs, ARO, etc are considered and included
in the final work product.
Work closely with
the Project Controls Group to monitor cost profiles and investigate anomalies
with responsible personnel.
Prepare and/or
review ad-hoc financial analysis or special projects as required to make
business decisions.
Ensure that
appropriate internal controls exist at all locations to protect company assets
which are adequate for SOX certification purposes.
Work in
conjunction with site management and the corporate Internal Audit Group to
ensure that control issues identified are addressed in an appropriate and
timely manner.
In conjunction
with regional or corporate personnel, ensure appropriate and adequate
insurance is arranged and executed to protect the project.
Actively
participate in the project team, specifically commercial aspects by generating
ideas for improvement and cost efficiency.
Provide
assistance/support to other corporate departments such as Investor Relations,
Corporate Development, Internal Audit, SOX Compliance, Treasury, Legal, Tax,
and Technical Services.
Interact when
necessary with the North American Regional Business Unit (NARBU) to achieve
consistency with NARBU financial practices which the project will be subject
to upon commencement of operations.

Qualifications
Accounting
professional designation required (CA, CMA, CGA) - CA designation preferred.
7 + experience in
accounting and finance in the construction and mining industry.
Involvement in the
assessment of design and operating effectiveness of internal controls over
financial reporting.
Experience with US
GAAP accounting principles and practices, knowledge of IFRS is a plus
Must be a self
starter, possessing superior technical financial and business knowledge with
excellent communication skills.
Must be highly
proficient in the use of financial software systems as well as MS Office.
Previous
experience with Oracle, and ability to train and develop staff in its use is
highly valued.
Must be able to
deal with stressful situations involving problems with multiple variables in a
wide range of situations.
Must have
knowledge of accounting and finance structure, policies, and procedures
required.
Able to speak,
read, and write in English, - Bilingual English/Spanish is highly desireable.
