Hiring Salary Range: $55,644 - $87,612/annual
Full Salary Range: $55,644 - $119,580/annual

Reporting to the Controller for the UCSD Foundation, the Accounting Manager is responsible for supervision of the Foundation accounting staff and ensuring an effective, timely and accurate accounting operation for the Foundation. Requires hands-on day to day staff management, in-depth knowledge of accounting principles, software and systems, knowledge of the fundamentals of good accounting system design and the ability to re-design as needed. The Foundation will possibly convert the existing accounting software to a new system in the future; experience in accounting system review, selection, conversion process and implementation a plus.
The Foundation's accounting systems are complex in nature, involving several thousand individual funds; assets are in excess of $500 million and growing at a rate of 20% or more annually. The environment is full scope: daily work through the production of complete, externally audited financial statements and footnotes for the Foundation in accordance with GAAP and GASB. Fund types include endowment, expendable funds, and assets managed or trustees for others. Includes the assets of the UCSD Alumni Association and as well as numerous support groups. Extraordinary standards of care, and an understanding of risks and fiduciary obligations required in the performance of duties.
The Foundation is a separately incorporated charitable 501(c)(3) organization, governed by the laws of the State of California and the IRS, and by a board of trustees, comprised of community members, the Chancellor, UCSD vice chancellors, faculty and alumni members. The Foundation uses a computerized, stand-alone fund accounting system, which is separate and distinct from that of UCSD's accounting system. Also requires the use and understanding of the UCSD accounting system to service Foundation customers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
*Demonstrated knowledge of and extensive work experience in the application of the generally accepted theories, principles and practice of accounting.
*Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP and GASB pronouncements and proven ability to analyze and implement new and/or existing complex accounting pronouncements issued by GASB, as well as standard accounting procedures.
*Demonstrated knowledge of systems of internal control and best practice.
*Extensive work experience in the preparation and analysis of financial statements and in analyzing, interpreting and implementing Governmental Accounting Standards (GASB) statements.
*Experience typically obtained by five to ten years of progressively responsible experience in complex accounting operations management.
*College degree in accounting or related field or comparable related education and experience. Non-profit accounting experience and U.S.
*Demonstrated effective accounting operation managerial skill.
*Proven ability to oversee a complex accounting environment with hard deadlines, large volumes, demanding customers, and an extraordinary standard of fiduciary obligation.
*Strong organization and detail-oriented skills, with proven ability to manage and prioritize own work and work of others to meet deadlines despite frequent interruptions.
*Demonstrated experience in supervision with the ability to hire, train, evaluate and discipline staff.
*Demonstrated effective coaching skills.
*Ability to resolve conflict, use of diplomacy, ability to provide guidance and instruction, motivation, team building, and stimulation of productivity.
*Ability to coach staff in career development.
*Ability to apply progressive discipline if needed.
*Demonstrated knowledge of complex investment portfolios, including equity and fixed income securities, venture capital, real estate and other investments; clearly demonstrated experience in applying and overseeing the application of proper book and market value accounting rules; understanding of the nature of endowment or mutual fund accounting processes and allocations.
*Experience in cash flow management and estimates, and accurate investment allocation calculations.
*Direct, hands-on experience in using computerized general ledger packages.
*Proven skill in implementing standards, policies and procedures, knowledge of performing accounting system maintenance and updates, back-up standards, and possess a thorough and integrated knowledge of the computerized accounting system.
*Ability to perform any accounting function as necessary in absence of staff.
*Proven ability to determine system needs and to research reporting functions of systems and to implement them.
*Proven ability to implement new systems via conversion.
*Advanced knowledge and experience in working within a computerized environment and possess superior computer skills, including proven in-depth skills in the use of PC based systems, both at the command prompt and using menus, and advanced skill in spreadsheet software use.
*Word processing software knowledge required at standard level.
*Demonstrated excellence in analytical and mathematical skills, with proven ability to independently comprehend, interpret highly complex terminology or formulas, in the form of govt regs, GASB, University policy, and to make appropriate recommendations to executives.
*Proven ability to research and report on a variety of issues using high-level problem solving skills.
*General working knowledge of Federal and State income tax laws of individual and charitable trusts to provide information for the fiduciary tax returns for charitable trusts and the UC San Diego Foundation (all prepared by external sources).
*This position will require working beyond normal business hours and some weekends during quarter and fiscal year ends.
*CPA preferred.
