Organization Background:
After-School All-Stars (ASAS) is a leading national after-school program provider. Our comprehensive school-based programs combine activities and learning to help build the knowledge and skills children need to succeed, both in school and in life. Founded as a national organization by Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1992, ASAS is building a national model for after-school program delivery through our 13 chapters, all of which serve at-risk youth in major U.S. cities.
The Position:
After-School All-Stars is currently seeking a motivated, capable and efficient Controller for the National Headquarters in Los Angeles. Reporting to the Director of Strategy and Operations, the Controller’s primary responsibility will be to provide full-service financial management for both the National Office and (to start) a small subset of ASAS chapters.
Some Specific Responsibilities Include:
§ Accounts Payable
§ Purchasing
§ Internal Controls
§ Cost Allocation
§ Bank reconciliations
§ General ledger management
§ Daily processing of ad hoc transactions in compliance with company policies (supervision of supporting staff)
§ Administer month-end general ledger closing and preparation of related financial statements
§ Budget to actual reporting including variance analysis
§ Annual organizational and program-specific budget development
§ Maintain supporting worksheet documentation and systems
§ Coordinate year end financial statement audit review with external audit staff
§ Ensure the accurate and timely completion of all financial statements, reports and statutory filings, including: State and Federal informational income tax returns, grant expenditure reports, grant budgets and budget modifications, grant funding/reimbursement requests and other reports as needed.
Traits and Characteristics:
This is a mid-level position in a highly visible national not-for-profit. The qualified applicant must have both strong financial skills, as well as a customer service orientation for working with the staff of local ASAS chapters. He/she must also have experience and an understanding of non-profit accounting, including FAS 116/117, cost allocation, and general federal guidelines related to the receipt and expenditure of federal funds (e.g., OMB CIRCULAR A-133).
Primary Relationships:
This position reports to the Director of Strategy and Operations.
Experience and Education:
The successful candidate MUST have the following skills and experience:
§ BA/BS in finance, accounting or a related field
§ 5-10 years of financial management experience with increasing responsibility including deep knowledge of accounting and controller function and skills related to this position. Specifically, the applicant should have experience in nonprofit fund accounting.
§ Experience with non-profit specific batch processing accounting software
§ PC proficiency and established skills in Microsoft Excel and Word
